The Four Tendencies Workshop

Gretchen Rubin developed the “Four Tendencies” personality framework to explain the different ways people respond to expectations. The Four Tendencies Workshop equips participants to understand the differences among the four types—Upholders, Questioners, Obligers, and Rebels—and to engage in scenarios and discussions to put that knowledge into practice.

Participants come away with specific strategies to improve their relationships with clients, co-workers, patients, students, or trainees, as well as friends and family. The workshop is lively, fun, and packed with information.

Whom is it for?

This workshop is for you if you’d like to present an in-person workshop with a group of adults to teach them about Gretchen Rubin’s Four Tendencies framework.

This workshop is designed for small-to-large groups of adults who want to learn how the Four Tendencies can help them improve their relationships with clients, co-workers, patients, students, trainees, friends, or family—as well as prevent conflict, combat procrastination, address burnout, promote understanding, and persuade effectively.

Rather than simply presenting the information from The Four Tendencies book, this workshop offers scenarios and opportunities to practice applying knowledge in pairs or small groups.

To facilitate this workshop, it is best that you have some experience teaching workshops and have an understanding of the participants and their goals, and a willingness to explore with them the applications of the Four Tendencies.

Whether you’re a health-care professional, an in-house educator at a large corporation, an independent consultant helping small organizations with team building, a coach, pastor, teacher, or manager, this workshop provides all the materials you need to lead your group through a 1-, 2-, or 3-hour workshop about the Four Tendencies framework.

  • Be able quickly to identify the Tendency of a client, student, trainee, etc.
  • Predict potential for conflict among the Tendencies and take steps to avoid it.
  • Persuade or encourage someone effectively according to his or her Tendency.
  • Notice people have different perspectives, and different methods work for different people.

“The Four Tendencies workshop is incredibly well-designed. The slide-deck and facilitator guide are excellent. I received fantastic feedback from the attendees, many whom gasped and said things like ‘Get out of my head’ or ‘Stop reading my mind’ as I shared Gretchen’s insights with them. I truly believe the Four Tendencies is a framework that benefits everyone, and it was fun being there for all of those ‘ah-ha, lightbulb’ moments, as well as those connections people made with each other in the group.”

What workshop attendees had to say:

“Those of us from our office who attended were discussing the workshop afterwards and we are excited to share what we have learned with the rest of our office. We loved your integrated approach to teaching the material as well—with the time for individual reflection, group participation, and multiple times of teaching methods.”

– Moriah Heintz, Program Coordinator, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Washington, workshop participant

“I really liked how the training was part lecture and still interactive, putting similar types of people together. We had such great conversations! This information will be very helpful in dealing with clients and coworkers.”

– Anonymous workshop participant

“The most helpful thing about the workshop was learning the best approaches to use with other tendencies. It was also so helpful to recognize where I’m experiencing the negative aspects of my Tendency and can course correct.”

– Anonymous workshop participant

“There was a great balance between learning about myself and learning about others. There were so many practical applications that will help me with my coworkers. I loved all the interactive aids and incorporation of different learning styles.”
